Overview
What is Ledger?
Ledger is a hardware wallet platform that stores your private keys offline in a secure element. This presentation walks you through unboxing, initial setup, firmware care, backup, and best security practices so you can start managing cryptocurrencies with confidence.
Why a hardware wallet?
Hardware wallets keep private keys offline and require physical confirmation for transactions — dramatically lowering the risk of online attacks, phishing, and malware.
Before you begin
What you'll need
- Ledger device (Nano S Plus or Nano X) and original USB cable
- Computer or smartphone with internet access
- A safe place to write your recovery phrase (no photos)
Safety first
Only download Ledger apps and firmware from official Ledger domains. Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone or enter it on a website.
Step-by-step setup
1. Unbox & power on
Carefully open the package and inspect the tamper-evident seals. Connect your Ledger to power using the supplied cable and power on the device.
Tip:
If packaging looks tampered with, contact Ledger support before proceeding.
2. Initialize the device
Follow on-device prompts to create a new wallet or recover from an existing seed. Choose a secure PIN of at least 4–8 digits and never reuse it elsewhere.
3. Write down your recovery phrase
The device will display a 24-word recovery phrase one word at a time. Write these words down in order on the provided recovery sheet. Store it offline in a safe place.
Important:
Never take a photo, copy to cloud, or share the phrase. Anyone with it can access your funds.
4. Install Ledger Live
Download the official Ledger Live desktop or mobile app to manage accounts, install apps and perform transactions. Ledger Live connects to your device but never exposes your private keys.
5. Install coin apps & add accounts
Use Ledger Live to install the app for the crypto you want to manage (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.). Then add an account and receive a small test transaction first.
6. Verify transactions
Always verify transaction details on the Ledger device screen and confirm physically. This prevents remote tampering and phishing sites from tricking you.
Maintenance & Security
Keep firmware up to date
Ledger regularly releases firmware updates for security improvements. Only update via official Ledger Live prompts and follow instructions carefully.
Backups & recovery
Store multiple copies of your recovery phrase in separate secure locations (safety deposit box, home safe). Consider using a metal backup plate for long-term durability.
Recognize scams
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. Beware of unsolicited messages, fake apps, or cloned websites asking for seeds or PINs.
Advanced tips
Use a passphrase (optional)
A passphrase adds an additional word to your seed and creates hidden wallets. Use with caution: if you forget it, funds are unrecoverable.
Multi-device strategy
For larger holdings, consider splitting funds across multiple devices and diversifying backup locations.
Frequently asked questions

Choose "Recover wallet" during device setup and enter your 24-word phrase exactly in order.
What if I lose my device?
Your funds are safe as long as your recovery phrase is secure. Use it to restore on a new Ledger or compatible wallet.
